Herbert Neil Beck

Herbert Neil Beck, Born May 8th, 1944 passed away on February 11th 2014. Herb was born in Strond, Vestur-Landeyjar, Iceland to Borgthor Valtyr Gunnarsson and Anna Ingigerdur Hermundsdottir. Herb grew up in Iceland on his ancestral home in southern Iceland, enjoying time with his brother and cousins who came to spend the summer. In the late 60s, Herb immigrated to Canada to attend Kingsway College where he met his wife Lorna. He then went on to Canadian Union College and earned his BA in religion. August 26, 1970 he married Lorna Hack in Winnipeg, Manitoba. From there, the couple moved down to Loma Linda where he obtained his Masters in Public Health from Loma Linda University. They then moved to Collegedale Tennessee where he earned his BA in Nursing. During this time his daughter Brenda was born to the family. The family then moved up to Rolette North Dakota where his son Mark was born. After obtaining his US citizenship, he joined the USAF and was based in Grand Forks North Dakota. He obtained the rank of Captain before being honorably discharged so that he could attend the University of North Dakota where he obtained his Family Nurse Practitioner degree and his Physician’s Assistant certification. After an unsuccessful job hunt in North Dakota, the family then moved down to Moberly Missouri in 1982 where the they then settled down. In the years spent here in Missouri, Herb has worked for Moberly Regional Medical Center, the HSTMVA, and University Hospitals in Columbia, and the Randolph County Health department. Herb is survived by his wife Lorna Louisa (Hack) Beck, children Brenda Lynn Beck, Mark Alan Beck and Mark’s wife Sara, two grandchildren, Holly and Perrin. He will be missed by family and many friends throughout North America and Iceland. The memorial will be held 4 p.m. on Saturday 2/15 at the Moberly Seventh-day Adventist Church at 1410 E McKinsey Street, Moberly, MO. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to Randolph County Health Department - Special Beck Project 423 E Logan Street, Moberly, Mo 65270.
