Mary Elizabeth Nichols, age 84, of Moberly passed away Monday, October 29, 2018 at Boone Hospital in Columbia, MO.
She was born on September 19, 1934 in Clark, Missouri to Marvin Lonzo Hughes and Mildred Loretta Davidson Hughes. Mary was a 1953 graduate of Westran High School. On June 27, 1953 she married Oliver “Bud” Nichols in Huntsville, MO.
Mary enjoyed reading, sewing and making quilts. She was well known in the community and held a variety of jobs in her lifetime. Mary began clerking at Mear’s Drug Store, was a bookkeeper for Gillan’s Bakery, Carlson’s, City Bank (where she also worked as a teller) and KRES Radio. She also worked as a clerk for Safeway and Food Barn for 21 years. At age 60, she retired in order to stay home and babysit her first granddaughter. Mary absolutely loved watching children and over the next 24 years she would babysit for upwards of 30 children, caring for them from infancy to school age.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bud and her siblings, Deloris Summers, Nina Owens, Phyllis Hughes, Shirley Nichols and Clifford Hughes.
Survivors include her son, Mark Nichols (Shirley Olney) of Moberly, MO; her beloved granddaughters, Logan Elizabeth Nichols of Chicago, IL and Alaina Marie Nichols of Cole Camp, MO; extended family and close friends.
A memorial service celebrating Mary’s life will be held Sunday, November 4, 2018 at Pathway Memorial Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m. A private interment at Higbee City Cemetery will take place at a later date. Visitation will be held Sunday, November 4, 2018 at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service.
