Richard Curtis Mayo

Richard Curtis Mayo of Huntsville, MO, passed away Wednesday, November 13, 2024, peacefully at home with his family by his bedside. He was born May 20, 1936, in Clifton Hill, MO, to Curtis Allen and Helen Vivian (Bybee) Mayo. He graduated from Clifton Hill High School in 1954. He served in the US Navy from 1954 to 1958. He was a member of the Clifton Hill Baptist Church. He met and later married his soulmate, Betty Bernice McAdams, at this church on June 11, 1960. He attended this church until recently when his health no longer allowed him to do so.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a nephew, Robert Mayo and a brother, Gordon Kent Mayo.

Richard is survived by his wife, Betty, and four children: Dorothy (Dennis) Crutchfield of Clifton Hill, Melanie (Rusty) Crutchfield, Richelle (Mike) McCawley and Curtis W. Mayo all of Huntsville.

Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Richard (Karen) Crutchfield of Jefferson City, Travis (Amanda) Crutchfield of Holts Summit, Chantry Crutchfield of Clifton Hill, Josh (Katie) Crutchfield of Clifton Hill, Tabitha (Kurtis) Arnett of Paris, Shelby (Clint) Brown of Huntsville, Justus (Kayla) McCawley of Huntsville and Ally Mayo of Fulton; 23 great-grandchildren, a brother, Bob (Melba) Mayo, of Livingston, TX, and several nieces and nephews.

Richard was a lifelong farmer, an employee of Peabody Coal Company and later an employee of AECI of Thomas Hill for 27 years. He was a devoted son, husband and father, an affectionate brother, a kind friend and helpful neighbor, an earnest Christian gentleman and patriot, whose sufferings were borne with patience and fortitude, has fought a good fight and entered into the joys of the life beyond the vale of tears. His favorite Bible verse was Matthew 22:37, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment."

A private family ceremony will be held at a later date for Richard.
