Richard D. Shannon, 72, of Madison, completed his life’s journey July 5, 2014 at Boone Hospital in Columbia surrounded by his family. He was born March 2, 1942 in Clifton Hill Missouri to Leroy “Pete” Shannon and Mona Tremain Shannon. He married Elizabeth “Susie” Stanfield September 15, 1961 at Carpenter Street Baptist Church in Moberly and they were blessed with three daughters.
Richard and Susie owned and operated the Madison Inn in Madison from 1985 until 2003. Richard also served as Mayor of Madison for several years. He worked building houses for Wick Homes and later branched out on his own and built houses with his brother-in-law and also with John Barton. The family said Richard was always learning. Prior to retirement, he was working at the Moberly Correctional Center.
Family was very important to Richard. He was a member of the NEMO Bow Hunters in Moberly and taught several of his grandchildren how to shoot a bow and arrow. He also enjoyed fishing and camping with the family.
Those preceding him in death are his parents and an infant brother, Norman Shannon.
He is survived by two brothers, Donald Shannon of Moberly and Monty Shannon of Coal City, Illinois; three daughters; Cathy Collins (Steavy) of Koshkonong, Missouri, Mona Sue Lewis of Cairo, Missouri and Redeana Farris-Shannon of Madison; seven grandchildren, three great- granddaughters, extended family and many friends.
Services will be Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Pathway Memorial Funeral Home in Moberly, Missouri at 6:00 p.m. with visitation from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions would be appreciated to the Monroe County Cancer Supporters. Pathway Memorial Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.
