Russell Lavon Sumpter Sr.

Russell Lavon Sumpter Sr., age 90, of Moberly, Missouri, went home to the Lord on May 18, 2023, at his home.

Russell was born on May 31, 1932, in Higbee, Missouri, to Wayland Spencer Sumpter and Cora Mae (Coliver) Sumpter.

Russell and Marguerite Guthrie were wed in Moberly, Missouri.

He honorably served in the United States Army in the Korean War, receiving a Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. He later transferred to the Army Reserves, serving 8 years.

Russell worked in construction in Columbia, Missouri for many years. His family will always remember him for his great cooking and playing chess as a family while growing up.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite Sumpter; son, Ricky Sumpter; parents, Wayland and Cora Sumpter; siblings, Elnora Duncan, Billy, Gerald, Gary, Wayland Jr. and Adrian Sumpter.

Russell is survived by his sons, Russell (Julie) Sumpter Jr., Carl (Elvia) Sumpter and Timmy Sumpter; 12 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brothers, Vernon Sumpter and Jackie (Ruth) Sumpter; extended family and close friends.
