Sonja A. Newberry

Sonja A. Newberry, 77, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2015 at Heritage Hall in Centralia. She was born to Tony and Alice (Bukis) Maiewski on May 18, 1937 in Lincoln, Illinois. In 1959 she married the late James L. Newberry. Sonja was a member of the First Christian Church in Moberly, and former member of Sweet Springs Baptist Church. Sonja retired from Banquet Foods, and spent the majority of her career in the Moberly schools as a cook and was lovingly known as “the lunch lady”, she also was a dietary aid at the Moberly Caring Center. She enjoyed life and people. Sonja will be sadly missed by family, friends and her dog, Jasper. Sonja was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James; and brother, Arthur. She is survived by her 5 daughters: Pam(Pfeifer) Castle and husband John of VA, Debbie (Pfeifer) Powell and husband Earl of Moberly, Vicki Asanti and husband Gary of NM, Diana Newberry of Columbia, and Monica Brummett and husband Brett of OK; sister, Jennie Mount of Lincoln, IL; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will begin on Monday, February 2 , 2015 with visitation from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Million Taylor Funeral Homes of Moberly. Funeral Services will take place on Tuesday, February 3 , 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of the funeral home. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
